Title |
Bronze Age socketed axehead (fragment) |
||
Description |
English: A fragment of a copper-alloy socketed axehead of Late Bronze Age date. The piece represents the lower part of the axehead. The tool is hollow and has been made in two pieces, although no casting seam is visible. As the width increases towards the bottom, the thickness decreases. The blade is convex at each end but the central area has been worn flat. The axehead has a pronounced curvature which appears to be a contemporary feature and suggests that it may have been used primarily as an adze - i.e. turned ninety degrees from its normal position. The surface retains areas of a light green patina but is heavily corroded elsewhere. The object measures 35.5mm long, 41.4mm wide and 12.5mm thick. The weight is 62.53g. |
