Title
Bronze Age rim sherd (plan)
Description
English: Pottery rim sherd with a flat, slightly flanged rim and decorated with incised vertical lines within two horizontal delineated bands on the exterior of the body, running along the width of the sherd, between the rim and the shoulder.
The surface of the exterior and the interior of the sherd has the remains of carbonised residue on it. Beyond this the surface and core of the sherd have been oxidised to a light brown. The fabric looks, from macroscopic investigation, to have mica, white feldspar and slate inclusions, which is typical for pottery of this period in Cornwall.

This is quite a fine sherd for the Bronze Age, but its flattened and flanged rim and its decoration make it comparable to Trevisker ware sherds excavated from the Bronze Age settlement site at Trethellan Farm, Newquay, reported on in Cornish Archaeology No.30 (1991), page 109, Fig.40, No.3, which date it to the Middle Bronze Age c.1500-1150. Another example of a similar pattern of decoration can be found on a small urn from Pendennis, Falmouth (unpublished).
