Title |
Bronze Age pot sherd (plan) |
||
Description |
English: Pottery body sherd decorated with a single impressed twisted cord, in two lines at oblique angles to each other, so that it creates a chevron pattern running horizontally along the width of the sherd.
The surface and core of the sherd have been oxidised to an orangey brown colour. The interior surface of the sherd has been wiped, and there is the impression of the textile used on the surface, probably before reaching the 'leather-hard' stage while drying, in order to remove surface condensation. The fabric looks, from macroscopic investigation, to have mica, white feldspar, and gray augite inclusions, which are typical of the gabbroic clay that is found on the Lizard in Cornwall and used extensively during this period.The style of the decoration makes this sherd comparable to Trevisker ware sherds excavated from the Bronze Age settlement site at Trethellan Farm, Newquay, reported on in Cornish Archaeology No.30 (1991), page 109, Fig.40, No.1, which date it to the Middle Bronze Age c.1500-1150. |
