Title
Bronze Age palstave fragment
Description
English: A fragment of a cast copper alloy palstave of Bronze Age date, possibly Middle Bronze Age dating to c. 1600- 900 BC.

The cutting edge and part of the head of the palstave survive. It is sub rectangular in shape, although gradually widening twoards the cutting edge, with a flaring blade that creates a semi circular edge. The surface is scratched and damaged, with a greenish patina developing between darker brown and orange patches. Areas damaged by scratching display the green colour more clearly. Two small holes created by air bubbles during casting are visible on the break surface, and there are suggestions of further, smaller holes. The object is solid at the point at which it is broken, although there is a small depression on the break surface which may hint at its being potentially socketed, although this would be highly speculative. Given the solidity, size and profile of the cutting edge a Middle Bronze Age palstave is a more appropriate designation.

<a href="https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/917382">LEIC-7CE26E</a> is a very close parallel, and <a href="https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/50102">NMGW-D513A1</a> is also similar.

Measurements: 41.6mm wide, 33.4mm long, 9.4mm thick, weight 57.86g.
