Title
Bronze Age palstave axe, detail of decoration.
Description
English: Bronze Age cast copper alloy flanged axehead, complete, 1700-1500BC. The butt end tapers a little in plan, and the butt corners are rounded. The flanges are not pronounced, and have a flowing line (gradually curving upwards a little, then downwards a little) from the butt end to blade tips, resulting in an elongated pointed oval profile. The width of the flange side is c.8.5mm max, and the flange facets c.6-7mm each. The flange crest coincides with the low (c.2mm high) bump stop at roughly the centre of the axe - on one side this is slightly curved towards the blade end. The flange stands at c. 3mm max from the septum/blade (on the septum just behind the stop) - i.e. the flange crest. The flange sides and facets are apparently deliberatly decorated with diagonally angled wide shallow grooves (c. 3.5mm width) with a slight ridge between, along each surface (side & facets). The blade tips are splayed, with pronounced tip hollows The edge bevel is well defined on one side (and less so on the other) at c.18mm from the cutting edge (c.18.5mm on the other side). The patina is mid green, and survives mainly in the middle of the axe, with the blade end and butt end being more pitted with light green corrosion. Length 124.21mm, width of cutting edge 60.14mm, width of butt end c.22mm, width at stop 30.73mm, thickness max (across flanges at stop) 17.95mm, thickness of axe just in front of stop (towards the blade end) c.13-14mm, weight 322.0g.
