Title
Bronze Age palstave (front and side views)
Description
English: A fragment of a cast copper alloy palstave axehead, dating to the Middle Bronze Age, between 1500 – 1150 BC (length: 34mm; width: 26mm; thickness at flanges: 19mm; thickness between flanges at stop: 8.5mm; weight: 27.2g).<br.
The rear fragment of this palstave axehead is all that remains. The septum (the area between the flange facets and the stop ridge) is partially remaining with one flange facets to either side more complete than the other. The butt of the axehead has a straight edge. On both sides of the axe there are partially visible linear casting scars / ribs which extend from the butt and continue down the central length of the artefact. These casting scars have been trimmed and possibly hammered. It is likely that these scars are the remnants of the two part mould used to cast the artefact. There are a few bubbles at the butt of the axe, which also indicate the casting process. Overall, the artefact fragment is in a slightly worn but good condition with a dark green patina.
