Title
Bronze Age palstave (fragment)
Description
English: A fragment of a copper-alloy palstave of Middle Bronze Age date.

The piece represents the top of the recessed socket. The upper side has a horizontal central portion which at each end extends smoothly into a downward curve. On the surviving portions of the vertical sides are remnants of the raised edges. The surfaces are darkly patinated and this patina extends across the jagged bottom edge, indicating that the break occurred in antiquity. On one surface is an area of encrustation, which is probably a corrosion product from the copper but could also be a second, adhering substance such as mineralised wood.

The object measures 19.9mm long, 27.2mm wide and up to 7.6mm thick. The weight is 12.4g.
