Title
Bronze Age palstave
Description
English: A copper-alloy palstave of Middle Bronze Age date.

The socket, which accounts for just over a third of the length, has a damaged top side and outward-bowing vertical sides. It is formed, on both the upper and lower surfaces, by a pair of right-angled flanges, which flank the flat central area and increase in height towards the bottom, where they are joined together by a horizontal stop ridge. Immediately below the stop ridge, there is a shield-shaped depression, divided in two by a vertical ridge. This ridge extends into the blade, gradually dissipating a short distance above the cutting edge. The blade has inward-bowing sides which flare towards the bottom, the thickness tapering to the point where it terminates in a convex cutting edge. A vertical casting seam is visible on the two narrower surfaces of the piece and indicates the use of a two-piece mould. On one of these surfaces, this seam is interrupted by a side loop, located at the same height as the stop ridge. Hammer marks are visible across the well patinated surfaces of the palstave, although corrosion has removed this surface in some parts.

Dimensions: 153.5mm long, 57mm wide, 27.2mm thick (stop ridge). Weight: 292.77g.

This piece is from the Taunton metalwork assemblage of the Mid Bronze Age and dates from c. 1400-c. 1250 BC. A parallel, albeit without the stop ridge, is illustrated by Rohl and Needham (1998: fig. 30, no. 145).
