Title
Bronze Age palstave
Description
English: A copper-alloy palstave, dating from the Middle Bronze Age.

The artefact has a squared butt, and flanges which increase in height towards a stop ridge. Below this, the concave sides of the body flare towards the convex blade. There is a flat-topped mid-rib and a similar rib also extends along each outer side of the body. On the two narrower faces there is a central casting flash and also numerous hammer marks. There is a small casting flaw, located on one side, at the top of the stop ridge. The surfaces have a dark green patina and there are several patches of corrosion. The object measures 165mm long, 59.4mm wide and up to 27mm thick (at the stop ridge). It weighs 403.1g.

Dot Boughton (pers. comm.) has identified this palstave as being typical of the 'Taunton metalwork assemblage' of c. 1400-1275 BC. It was probably made during Taunton's 'ornament horizon', which saw the production of various decorative pieces of metalwork, including pins. Parallels on the PAS database include NARC-2DF721 and CORN-FD2517.
