Title
Bronze Age flat axehead
Description
English: A cast copper alloy flat axehead of Early Bronze Age date, that is c. 2300-1900BC. The axehead is sub-rectangular in plan with a narrow rounded butt and parallel straight sides which expand to the cutting edge. It is of narrow butted form. The relatively straight sided body broadens to the blade, which is 1mm thick. There an indication of the beginnings of a stop ridge.

The axehead measures 65mm in length, 15mm in width at the butt, 22.5mm in width at the cutting edge and 6.5mm in thickness. It weighs 42.9g.

The patina across most of the axehead has been worn and eaten away by invasive corrosion. This has left much of the axe covered in deep craters or pocks. A small amount of smooth mid-brown patina is visible on each face from the cutting edge for 15mm in length.

This axe is part of the Migdale or Aylesford metalwork assemblage of the Early Bronze Age and can be dated c. 2300-1900BC.
