Title
Bronze Age flanged axe
Description
English: A Rowlands type 1, Group 2a flanged axe, probably early in the middle Bronze Age in date.

It is a complete haft flanged axe with leaf shaped flanges which stop just below a marked internal stopridge. There are slight ridges on the side at the base of the flanges. The undecorated septum is slightly lower than the blade. The crescentic blade edge has slightlr recurved ends. The patina is medium brown and dark green with some slight damage to the blade edge, both ancient and recent, and some recent abrasion marks can be seen on the surface. It measures 145mm in length, 63mm in width across the blade, and 26.5mm in thickness, the stopridge is 20mm in height.

This a rare type of axe and may be imortant in showing the local development of the plalstave from the flanged axe with the stop-ridge. Similar parallels are known from the mildenhall and lakenheath fens and are in Moyses Hall and Ipswich museums.
