Title
Bronze Age ewert park sword
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy Late Bronze Age possible Ewart Park type sword consisting of a fragment of the hilt and the majority of the blade.
The hilt is incomplete only the fragments of two of the circular perforations remain.

The blade is pointed oval in section with a thick but diffuse midrib narrowing smoothly to the prominent carinations between the centre of the blade and the bevelled cutting edges. The blade thins and narrows gradually to the narrowest part of the section, 27.8mm wide and 8.5mm thick before starting to widen to 33.45mm and tapering towards the old break at the tip where it is 11.95mm wide and 4.25mm thick. A slight ridge located on either side just above the cutting edge along is visible along the whole of the blade. The edges are notched in places and the very edges of the sharp blades have been lost to wear/damage, probably post-deposition.

It appears that the blade above the ricasso, and any ricasso notches that may have been present, have been hammered to create blunted and flattened edges. This modification may have served as a make-shift grip/hilt after the original hilt/grip had been broken. The section that has been hammered is uneven, in places the flattened edge is located before the ridge, in others the ridge is obliterated. The hammered section is 100.65mm in length (max 4.5mm thick) on one edge and 97.4mm in length (max 4.25mm thick) on the other.

The sword consists of two fragments which have been deliberately bent and subsequently broken, it has been suggested the break is more recent.

Similar swords with evidence of modified blades which could have been used as a make shift grip have been recorded on the database including 2011 T429.
