Title
Bronze Age Unlooped Palstave
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper unlooped palstave of Middle Bronze Age date (1500 BC-1150 BC).

The lower part of the blade, including the cutting edge, is missing due to breaks. The breaks may be recent. The side flanges are high and each face of the septum is slightly concave. The haft moulding close to the break measures 22.8 x 19.1mm. The lower part of each septum face has at least tow narrow vertical ribs and the septum terminates with a insignificant curving stop on both faces. Below each stop, at the top of the blade, there is a very shallow shield-shaped depression. The blade is trapezoidal in plan and the sides flare evenly outwards towards the breaks. In side view, the palstave is an elongated sub-triangular shape being more pointed at the bottom. On the side of the larger of the flanges there are traces of a casting seam. There may have been a casting seam on the other side originally. However, due to corrosion, none is visible. No indication of any hammering on the patinated surfaces.

Much of the original surface is now corroded away and small areas of patina have survived. This is dark grey. This palstave is severely corroded and is now mainly covered with uneven mottled light green scabbing.

121.5 x 45.4 x 20.4mm. Weight: c. 320g.
