Title
Bronze Age Socketed Axehead
Description
English: A fragment of a cast copper alloy socketed axehead of Late Bronze Age date (c. 1150 BC - c. 800 BC). Length: 32.1mm; width: 32.0mm and 11.9mm thick. Weight: 35.78g.

This fragment is the lower part of the blade and cutting edge. Viewed in plan, the sides flare outwards slightly to the cutting edge which is slightly and evenly curved. An irregular break has occurred just above the base of the socket. Viewed from the side, the blade is a steep ‘V’-shape. On one of the ‘V’ shaped sides there is a prominent casting seam which is well off-centre of the longitudinal centre-line. The blade does not appear to have been re-sharpened.

The surfaces are generally covered in copper alloy corrosion products. Some of these are in the form of small powdery blisters.
