Title |
Bronze Age Socketed Axehead |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy socketed axehead of late Bronze Age date. The axehead measures 89.8mm in length and weighs 274g. Just over half of the socket is missing. On the exterior of the sub-rectangular mouth there are four linear mouldings, the upper most of which is larger and thicker that the other three. There are no other mouldings. The socket has a maximum thickness of 7.5mm and a depth of 60mm. The complete loop starts just below the mouth mouldings. It measures 19.4mm in length and the width of the D-shaped cross section is between 10.5mm and 8.7mm. There is an indistinct casting flash along the centre of the two narrow sides and some pitting on each face. The side flare gently from below the loop and the measurement across the asymmetrical curving cutting edge is 50.7mm. The form of this socketed axehead fits best into the Ewart Park phase, which dates from c. 1000-800 BC. It is an example of type South-eastern type A1 (plain). |
