Title |
Bronze Age Socketed Axehead |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy socketed axehead of late Bronze Age date. A substantial part of the axehead is missing, probably due to post-depositional damage. The wedge-shaped axehead measures 100.85mm in length and weighs 236g. The measurement across the expanded cutting edge (which is damaged on one side) is 50.39mm. It appears to have had a slight curve. The socket has a single mouth moulding, part of which is missing. The exterior of the socket is oval and the interior is sub-rectangular. The socket has a maximum thickness of 8.5mm. The loop, which starts just below the socket, is complete but has a break near the centrepoint. It measures 28mm in length and its circular cross section has a diameter of 4.31mm. There are three moulded narrow longitudinal ribs on each flat face, which extend the length of the socket. Along the suviving side, below the loop, there is a central ridge. The axe has a patchy light to dark brownish green patina. |
