Title
Bronze Age Palstave Axe
Description
English: Near complete cast copper alloy Bronze Age palstave of the late Penard/early Wilburton metalwork phase. The axe is of side looped type with prominent stop ridges. It is complete except for the tip of the butt and slight damage to the blade edge. The casting seams have been removed and smoothed down and there are transverse file marks across both faces of the blade edge which might indicate that the axe has been re-sharpened. Below the stop ridge, on both faces of the upper part of the blade section, the axe is decorated with 3 raised ribs arranged in a triangular formation which taper down the length of the face for about one third of its total length. The axe has a rich mid green patina and despite a few areas of bronze disease, most notably on one side of the blade, is in very good condition. Axes of this type are dated c.1100-900 BC.

Dimensions: Total length: 149.3mm; width of midpoint (side to side) 25mm; width of midpoint (top to bottom - including height of stop-ridge) 33.3mm, maximum width of blade (cutting edge) 40.6mm; width of butt 19.7mm; width of septum at stop-ridge 18.3mm, depth of septum at stop-ridge 7.9mm; length of side loop, 24.0mm, width of side loop 7.9mm; length of decorative ribs 29.5mm.
