Title
Bronze Age Palstave.
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy palstave of Middle Bronze Age date (1500 BC – 1150 BC). Length 89mm, width 44mm and 19mm thick. Weight 244.68g.

The butt, flange, septum, loop (if one existed) and part of the blade are missing and there are two old breaks.

The upper break, close to where a stop-ridge may have existed, is sub-rectangular in cross-section and measures 23mm in width and 19mm in thickness. Just below this break, on each face, is the remains of a shield-shaped depression which is much more pronounced on one of the faces. The upper break has several casting imperfections in the form of gas bubbles which may have constituted a weakness at this point and caused the implement to break whilst in use. The edges are slightly convex. From the upper break, the sides flare evenly outwards towards the cutting edge. Only about half of the cutting edge has survived as there is an oblique break to one side.

The implement is in poor condition. It is corroded overall and is suffering from active bronze disease. Tiny flecks of a patina on one face are mid-brown. There are also surface fractures on all faces.
