Title
Bronze Age Gold Flanged- twisted Torc. Treasure case no. 2011 T501
Description
English: A Bronze Age gold flanged- twisted torc fragment can be dated typologically to the Taunton (c. 1400-1250 BC), more probably the Penard (c. 1300-1150 BC), metalwork phases of the Middle Bronze Age. Treasure case no. 2011 T501.

The coiled flanges have a regular spacing although are slightly tighter on one end. Both ends have been cut and as a result the flanges were crushed and are flattened. The profile is slightly curved. The rim on the flanges has marks and is flattened in some areas. Possible traces of repair between flanges.

Length: 40.76 mm, Maximum Thickness: 6.71 mm, Weight: 7.0 g.

The gold flange twisted torc can be dated typologically to the Taunton (c. 1400-1250 BC), more probably the Penard (c. 1300-1150 BC), metalwork phases of the Middle Bronze Age (Roberts 2007). Gold working in Britain at this time is dominated by the casting of bars and ribbons and techniques as twisting and flange twisting (Murgia et al 2011). Although so far there are no other objects of the same type in the Isle of Wight, similar torcs were found in Hampshire in Christchurch, Blackwater (Taylor 1980 Ha 2; Eogan 1967 n. 41) and in Ropley (Taylor 1980 Ha 6; Eogan 1967 n.43). Gold flanged twisted torcs finds are concentrated in East Anglia, southwest and southeast England with around 8 torcs having been found in each region. They are present in smaller numbers in Wales and into northern and central Britain (Roberts 2007).
The objects qualify as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act (1996) (Designation Order 2002).
