Title
Bronze Age Flanged Axehead fragment
Description
English: A cast copper alloy fragment of a long-flanged axe dating from the very late Early to early Middle Bronze Age. The fragment is probably from a long-flanged axe characteristic of the Arreton Park metalwork assemblage. Arreton Types date to metalworking stage VI, which corresponds to Needham's (1996) Period 4 circa 1750-1550 BC. The fragment is from the butt end of the axehead. The break is old and worn. The terminal has rounded corners and measures 21.98mm in width and is 2.60mm thick. Flanges are present on both sides of the object. Overall, the surface of the fragment has a mid green patina but there are also areas of light green pitting. Surviving dimensions: 18.84mm x 25.96mm x 5.37mm. Weight: 8.58g An example of a complete long-flanged axe of the type associated with this fragment is recorded under reference LVPL-058DE6 and in Rohl & Needham (1998), p127.
