Title |
Bronze Age Flanged Axehead |
||
Description |
English: A cast copper alloy early short flanged axe probably of the Taunton metalwork style dating to the Middle Bronze Age (c.1400 BC - 1250 BC), Metalworking Phase VIII and IX which corresponds with Needham's period 4 and 5.
The butt is triangular in section which thickens towards the septum. The flanges start a short way in from the butt corners. They form a pointed oval shape in profile with the crest of the flange being the widest point, in the centre of the septum. There is no obvious stop ridge for the handle to butt against, but the blade is thicker than the septum. It is possible that a proto-stop ridge is present which is combined with the U shaped depression that extends onto the blade. This U shaped depression is the extension of the septum onto the blade and is called a shield shape on later palstaves . The blade widens in width forming triangular tips from which a crescentic cutting edge projects. The blade tapers in thickness to the edge with no edge bevel. The flanges are worn and broken, only one survives intact. On one face of the axe, both flanges are broken close to the septum creating small ridges. The other face has the one complete flange and one irregularly broken flange with a notch into the side that connects to the blade. A casting seems runs down each flange side, which has been fettled and filed close to the sides. There is no evidence of a side loop. The axehead has a bright green patination with patches of red-brown corrosion. The surface is worn and pitted, revealing small patches of a smooth dark green patina, particularly on the blade and the more complete flange crest. It measures 136.0mm in length, 56.8mm in width at the blade and 24.8mm at the butt, 24.5mm in thickness including the flanges, 8.4mm excluding and weighs 329g. Parallels can be seen in LANCUM-B39815, LANCUM-C126E6 and IOW-DC1AD8 on this database, all lacking the stop ridge characteristic of other axe types and with prominent cast flanges / wings. Similar axes can be seen in Schmidt and Burgess (1981), specifically plates 36-38, Early Short Flanged Axes of Type Caverton and Type Cragg Wood. |
