Title |
Bronze Age : Axe blade fragment |
||
Description |
English: A cast copper alloy socketed axe fragment, found as a single find. The fragment consists of the blade and part of the faces of the axe; therefore the body and mouth do not survive. The surface of the metal is worn and corroded; therefore no casting flashes are visible. The blade expands at the cutting edge, but the socket does not extend into the blade tips. The fragment measures 50.54mm blade tip to blade tip. The socket measures 36.27mm across. The cutting edge is corroded; therefore the original surface has been lost. The outer surfaces have a bright green patina. The object is noticeably less worn within the socket, where the patina is darker green in colour. The breaks are well worn. Socketed axes date to the Late Bronze Age. |
