Title
Bronze Age : Axe
Description
English: A cast bronze, socketed axehead of Late Bronze Age date circa 2150–800 BC. The metal of the axehead is a mid greenish-brown patina and is heavily pitted, showing signs of active bronze disease.

The axehead has a single mouth moulding which is rectangular in shape, measuring 36.7mm in length and 33.4mm in width externally and 25.9mm long and 24.2mm wide internally. From the mouth the blade expands to a tip which measures 51.7mm tip to tip. The blade edge is highly corroded and chipped. Lipped casting seams are visible on both sides of the axehead extending from the mouth and terminating at the blade tips. Organic packing material remains within the socket of the axehead. A loop, 8mm in width is connected to the axehead just under the mouth moulding.

Similar examples of this axehead can be seen in: Moore and Rowlands, 1972, plate X, no.43.
