Title
Bronze Age: Un-looped Palstave
Description
English: An incomplete and corroded Early Bronze Age un-looped palstave (c. 1500 BC-c. 1300 BC).

The flanges, the butt and the cutting edge are incomplete due to breaks.

The butt would have been rounded and the septum has a maximum thickness of 9.7mm close to the 'stop' and a minimum thickness of 3.8mm at the butt end. On both faces, just below the septum, a hollow shield-shaped area extends for a length of c. 19.5mm. Level with the stops the width is 23.4mm and the thickness is 26.3mm. The blade flares evenly towards the tips of the evenly curved cutting edge. There is a casting seam on both edges which appears to have been hammered down.

This palstave, found on the Ferruginous Sands, is corroded with some areas of bronze disease and is largely covered with iron staining/panning. A dull drab green patina survives on both faces of the septum.

Length: 147.6mm; width at tips of cutting edge: 47.7mm; thickness: 23.4mm. Weight: 311.00g. (post-room scales).

The implement belongs to the Primary / Early un-looped Palstave Group I which fits into Acton Park II - Taunton industries and dates c. 1500-1300 BC.

Sincere thanks are extended to Peter Reavill for classifying this object.
