Title
Bronze Age: Socketed Gouge
Description
English: A mouth fragment from a late Bronze Age copper-alloy possible socketed gouge (c. 1000 BC-c. 800 BC).

This fragment is sub-rectangular in plan and is curved when viewed from above. Considering the curvature of the mouth it was probably circular when complete. The top has a horizontal multiple (triple) mouth moulding, one moulding forming a rim to the mouth and two below. A possible casting seam has been fettled or hammered down.

The inner and outer surface is coarse and has a green patina. The breaks are fairly crisp.

Length: 29.0mm; width: 14.1mm; thickness at mouth: 2.9mm. Weight: 6.06g.

A similar socketed gouge with raised mouldings around the mouth was found in the Guilsfield Hoard (Montgomeryshire) in 1862 (Savory 1980: 117-118, fig. 38, ref: 64).

It is also possible that this fragment may have belonged to a small axehead, a hammer, or a leather worker's knife.
