Summary

[edit]
Description
English: "The cemetery stretched on both sides of Acharnean Street. 672 graves of various types were excavatedː simple rock-hewn shafts, stone or tile graves, stone sarcophagi, terracotta larnakes, and children's jar-burials of different periods. The grave gifts found in association with burials and cremations include all manner of terracotta vases, human and animal figurines, glass and terracotta unguentaria, bronze mirrors, gold jewelry, coins, and other objects. Funerary monuments such as columns, stelae, and marble vases, were discovered throughout the excavated area, some inscribed with the names and origin of those buried in the cemetery. During the second half of the 3rd century A.D., after the devastating invasion of Athens by the Herulians, a barbaric tribe, the cemetery fell into disuse, and a complex of pottery workshops covered much of its area...The workshops operated during the 4th century A.D."
