Nylon fuel pipe damaged by environmental stress cracking after a small leak of battery acid

| Description |
English: This nylon broken fuel pipe caused a serious accident when diesel fuel poured out from a van onto the road. A following car skidded and the driver was seriously injured when she collided with an oncoming lorry. Scanning electron microscopy or SEM showed that the nylon connector had fractured by stress corrosion cracking (SCC) due to a small leak of battery acid.
Français : Ce tuyau d'alimentation en carburant d'une camionnette a causé un grave accident lorsque du diesel s'en est échappé sur la route. Une voiture qui suivait a alors glissé et a percuté un camion venant en sens inverse, blessant sérieusement le conducteur. Le faciès de rupture de ce flexible d’alimentation en carburant, en nylon, montre une propagation des fissures caractéristique de la corrosion sous contrainte. Une analyse par microscopie électronique à balayage a montré qu'une petite fuite d'acide de batterie est à l'origine de la corrosion. |
