Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Broadgate and Precincts, 1983 Taken from the tower of the old cathedral church of St. Michael, looking westwards down the line of the Upper and Lower Precinct shopping areas towards Mercia House[1], the residential tower block at the bottom end of the Lower Precinct. To the right of Mercia House is the red sandstone tower of St John's Church. To its left a little further into the distance is the GEC factory (formerly Rudge-Whitworth) in Spon Street, now replaced by an entertainment complex. In the foreground, Broadgate by 1983 has been altered from a garden traffic island to a less formal promontory with roads on three sides. A ramp has replaced stairs to the upper levels of the Upper Precinct. Left foreground is Pepper Lane, running towards High Street, with a surviving pre-war bank building (demolished in later developments).
