A close up view of the historical marker attached near the east end of the Broad Street bridge. It states that there have been at least six bridges over the Scioto River at this spot including: a wooden toll bridge constructed in 1816 by Lucas Sullivant; a second wooden toll bridge, constructed in 1826 by Lucas's son, William Sullivant, and swept away by the flood of 1832; a two-span wooden covered bridge constructed by the U.S. government in 1834 as the first toll-free bridge at this location; a two-span, steel-truss design bridge constructed in 1883 and lasting until being severely damaged in the 1913 flood; a seven-span concrete arch bridge constructed in 1921 and carrying six lanes of traffic and two pedestrian walkways; and the Discovery Bridge, a five-span, post tensioned reinforced concrete bridge opened in 1992 and containing six lanes of traffic and two pedestrian sidewalks. |
