| Description |
The One Millionth Austin Although later research has proved that the calculations were not quite correct, this Austin Sixteen (made on 25th June 1946) was chosen as 'the one millionth Austin' and signed by all the employees at Longbridge. The final signature was that of Managing Director, Leonard Lord; his signature is just visible on top of the bonnet. Cars 999,999 and 1,000,001 were both raffled to Austin workers, but the 'Millionth' was retained as a display vehicle. The Austin Sixteen's design was based on the Austin Twelve of 1939 which was notable for its modern styling. Though planned in 1940, the Sixteen was not produced until 1944. It was fitted with an all-new overhead valve engine designed for a British equivalent of the US Jeep, which Austin and other British car makers were developing during the war. |
