1 Ed. 7 Its A(;uiLULTrRAi, CArAr.ii.rriEs. 17 LOWER MAINLAND. The Lower Maiiilniul, oxcopt the delta laiuls fonned by the .streams ilowinjf into the .sea,is for the most pai t heavily wooded with the Douglas hr, red cedar, poplar and birch previouslymentioned, with the additions of aiiother spruce (Flcea siic/icusiK), balsam fir (Ahien yraiidin),hemlock (Jstiffn nn-rftjhsinna), laryje-leaved maple (Acer tnacrophyUum), vine maple (J. cercina-tum)y red alder (A/iiiih rKbra), and some others. The high lands are generally wooded withDouglas tir and hemlock, growing to an enormous size and consequently very expensive toclear. The soil on such tracts is usually a red, gravelly loam, with a gravel subsoil, and iseminently fitted for the production of such fruits as apples and cherries, and of leguminous crop.s,especially red clover. On the low lands (not delta lands) the other trees I mention appear. Those parts overgrown with cedar and spruce (always of large growth) are naturally expensive
