Summary

[edit]
Description

c/n 95291 Built 1968 as part of an order of thirty-four single-seat and six two-seat Lightnings for the Royal Saudi Air Force. She first flew as G-AWON and was displayed as such at the 1968 SBAC Farnborough Airshow. She was delivered to the Royal Saudi Air Force in 1969 and flew initially as 53-686, then 201, 1305 and finally as 223. She was one of twenty-two Lightnings returned to British Aeropsace as part of the deal for Tornado strike aircraft and was flown to Warton in January 1986 using the British military serial ZF592. The planned resale did not happen and the aircraft remained stored until sold to Marine Salvage in 1997. The cockpit of ZF592 was reportedly used during filming of the ‘Wing Commander’ movie, but was then returned and the entire airframe was sold privately in 2001, although it reportedly has the wings from ZF589. She subsequently went on display at Norwich in 2002 and was acquired by the museum itself in 2016. She wears Saudi colours on her port side and is currently being repainted into RAF 74sqn markings on her Starboard side. City of Norwich Aviation Museum Horsham St Faith, Norwich, Norfolk, UK
