Description
English: Britannia Rules the Waves by Nicholas Habbe (w:da:Nicolai Habbe), in the Bendigo Art Gallery, Victoria. Painted 1876 and shown for sale Victorian Academy of Arts in 1877, priced £400. Marked: "N. F. HABBE. 1876." – a Dane who had migrated to Australia in 1875.


Britannia – armed with spear, helmet, and shield embossed with the British royal arms – is seated in a quadriga together with Neptune, armed with his trident. Behind them flies a Red Ensign with a rainbow nimbus within which is inscribed with the chorus of Rule, Britannia!: "rule britannia britannia rule the waves britons never shall be slaves" (recte: "will be slaves"). The chariot is drawn by four horses harnessed with horse collars, is preceded by three ichthyocentaurs, and is attended by sea-nymphs and a putto riding a dolphin.
