Description
English: Operated by the Central Gunnery School at RAF Leconfield, Wellington ‘BK214’ was on a fighter affiliation flight on 27th June 1946 when it was struck by Spitfire LF Mk.XVI ‘TE229’, also part of the Central Gunnery School. Both aircraft crashed, killing all six crew of the Wellington as well as the pilot of the Spitfire.

The Wellington crew were:- Warrant Officer Kenneth Hinchcliffe (pilot) Flight Lieutenant Allenby Mathers (Wireless Operator / gunner) Warrant Officer Harry Edwards (gunner) Flight Sergeant Roy Hancock (gunner) Flight Sergeant Joseph Ricketts (gunner) and Aircraftman 2nd Class Sidney Ballard (RAF Volunteer Reserve).

The Spitfire pilot was Flying Officer James Harrison.

The Wellington crashed at Hutton Cranswick in East Yorkshire. This engine was later recovered from the site and its condition demonstrates the speed of the impact. Wings Museum, Balcombe, West Sussex, UK
