Summary

[edit]
Description

Bristol Britannia 312 at the RAF Museum, Cosford, 8 July 2020. Although the RAF procured the Britannia as a military transport (C1 & C2) and the example in Cosford is displayed as such, it is actually an ex-BOAC airliner repainted in Air Support Command colours.

The Britannia was RAF Transport Command's first turbo-prop aircraft and the first turbo-prop long range airliner in the world. It was called 'The Whispering Giant', so quite (and smooth-flying) was it compared to contemporary piston-engined airliners. However, the dawn of the jet airliner was breaking at the same time so the Britannia was soon overtaken by the Comet, 707 and DC-10 and relatively few were built compared to anticipated sales. Nevertheless, in my opinion the most beautiful prop arliner ever built.
