Summary

[edit]
Description

c/n 13519 Built 1963 as the second of two aircraft built. The Bristol 188 was a research aircraft constructed mainly of stainless steel and was intended to investigate the effects of kinetic heating effects at sustained MACH.2 flight. First flew 29th April 1963 and during testing she achieved a maximum speed of Mach1.88. Her last flight was on 12th January 1964 after which the project was suspended. The type suffered from higher than expected fuel consumption and lower than expected maximum speed, not achieving the proposed Mach 2. In 1966 both aircraft were sent to the Proof & Experimental Establishment at Shoeburyness, Essex for use as targets for gunnery ground trials. By 1968 the only TSR.2 to have flown, XR219, had joined them. Rescued from Shoeburyness by the RAF Museum in 1972, she went on display at Cosford the same year, although without engines. An imposing aircraft, she has remained on display at Cosford ever since and is currently in the ‘Test Flight’ hangar. RAF Museum, Cosford, Shropshire, UK.
