Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Ipswich’s Bremer River, according to newspaper reports, had been choked for a number of years with water hyacinth, an introduced plant that became a pest forming clumps in freshwater lagoons, creeks and rivers. A heavy downfall of rain in February 1937 brought jubilant sightseers to the Bremer’s riverbanks it was reported. In the wider Hamilton reach of the Brisbane River the clumps of water hyacinth separated and died off once they met with sea water.

In the Queensland State Archives’ collection there is a 1900 technical drawing from the Department of Harbours and Rivers, of a 12ft wide and 30ft long Wooden Punt for Clearing “Water Hyacinths” Bremer River.
