Floor plan of the Govind Dev temple, Vrindavan Mathura

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Vrindavan (Brindaban) and Mathura are among the most important pilgrimage and religious centers in Hindu, Jain and Buddhist history. The Mathura archaeological site has yielded arts and inscriptions from pre-2nd century BCE period. Vrindavan has been a major temple town and destination for Hindus, particularly of Krishna tradition for 2000 some years. It has been repeatedly targeted for desecration and destruction, yet persistently rebuilt and restored with its numerous temples given its religious significance.
  • Above is the floor plan of Govind Dev temple, as rebuilt between 1592 and 1615 by Man Singh. It is one of the unique temples that shows a fusion of Hindu arts and architecture with Mughal architecture.
  • The floor plan temple follows the square and circle principle found in historic Sanskrit texts. However, the upper structure and halls have many elements of the Mughal period.
  • For a scholarly secondary source, see James Ferguson, History of Indian and Eastern Architecture, John Murray Publishers, London, pages 155–158.
  • This relative scale and relative dimensions in this architectural drawing are close to the actual temple. The plan above is, in part, based on the drawings of James Ferguson published in 1910. The plan illustrates the design and layout, but some intricate details are not shown for clarity. It shows close approximations and rounding, where exact measurements were not feasible.
