Summary
[edit]DescriptionBrihadisvara Temple-Thanjavur-TamilNadu-rustic.jpg |
English: The rustic look of the Brihadishvara Temple's main tower, which was constructed by Rajarajan Cholan 1000 years back. This tower itself is an edifice of Tamil architecture.
The vimana boasts a 66 meters height and is crowned by a huge single-piece stone which, believed to be placed there using a ramp that was built from a distant village, to reach the top. No mortar of any kind was used for its construction, it is simply built by bonding and notching techniques, yet it has stood more than 1000 years and more than 130,000 tons of granite is said to have been used to build it. The temple is said to have more than a hundred underground passage, most of which are sealed now. once these were used by Kings and Queens, especially during auspicious festivals.![]()
