Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Brighton Place. Head west up the path next to the Sussex Tavern cross Market Street and you are in Brighton Place. Built on a slight rise in the centre known as the Knab the small square had houses on them from the 17th century onwards. The flint building to the left is the Druids Head established in 1825 though the house is older. To the right in the foreground is the former House of Correction funded and opened by William IV in 1832 and turned into Santa's Grotto every Christmas by the local newspaper. The white building at the end of the street was formerly part of Hanningtons department store. Opened as a single shop selling "linen, drapery, mercery and haberdashery" by Smith Hannington in 1805 it soon expanded into the largest store in Brighton extending along North Street from opposite New Road to East Street. It continued trading until June 2001 when competition from other shopping areas finally forced it to close its doors. The premises have been split into individual units once more.
