Hays (May 9, 1819 - February 7, 1875) graduated from West Point in 1840 and then served as an artillery officer in the Mexican American War. He was appointed a lieutenant colonel at the start of the Civil War. He participated in the Battle of Antietam, Fredericksburg. He was promoted to a brigadier general in 1862. At the battle of Chancellorsville, he was wounded, taken prisoner and was exchanged in time to fight at Gettysburg in July 1863. After the war, he served in the 5th US Artillery at various posts until his death.
