Title |
Bridlington Roman figurine side |
||
Description |
English: A solid cast copper-alloy Roman figurine, possibly representing Atlas. The figurine is of a naked male figure, posed in an unusual half crouched position, with the left leg half bent and the right leg three-quarters bent. The head is tilted to the right, the left arm is bent and raised above the head. The right arm is broken off between the shoulder and elbow, but the surviving part is angled downwards. The detailing is not very fine, but the surface of the figure is somewhat corroded and worn, and there are patches of encrustation, particularly between the legs and up the back. It is suggested that the unusual pose is because the figure represents Atlas. He is supporting the world (now missing) and therefore pressed down into a crouch under the weight of it, the left hand held high to steady it and the missing right hand presumably supporting it. |
