d globes, individual globes, the latest and best physical and politi-cal maps, for all grades of work, pictures classified for class use, models of thecontinents and Massachusetts, modelling boards, productions in both the raw andmanufactured states. Apparatus for projection is provided for illustration ofbiology and geography. Industrial Laboratory. — This laboratory is furnished with thirty-threemanual training benches, ninety-three sets of tools, closets for students work, andspecial appliances, including a turning lathe with a circular saw and jig sawattachment. The Drawing Room is furnished with adjustable drawing stands and withfine examples of casts and models, for teaching in the various departments ofdrawing. Library. —The school has a large and valuable library of books for reference,with a card catalogue arranged for direct use in the studies of the course. Eachdepartment of the school has its own library arranged for consultation. LABORATORY FOR ZOOLOGY AND PHYSIOLOGY.

STATE NORMAL SCHOOL, BRIDGEWATER. 43 PRINCIPLES AND METHOD OF THE SCHOOL. Principles.—The ultimate object of the normal school is tomake the normal student, as far as possible, an educator. Teachers have the organization, the teaching, and training of theschools committed to their hands. They direct and control theactivities of the children while they are forming habits and layingthe foundations of character. The teacher should be able to trainthe child to the best use of all his power. The first distinctive principle of normal school work is that thenormal student is to be a teacher. He is to consider theacquisition and use of knowledge, the exercises of the school, hisown spirit, purpose, manners, and conduct, from the point of viewof the educator. From this point of view he must know the process by which themind acquires knowledge, must be able to present truth to thelearner clearly, forcibly, and persuasively.
