Description

Nidhe Israel Synagogue in Bridgetown, Barbados, is sometimes called the oldest synagogue in the Western Hemisphere. It has a long and varied history, and its rank may depend on your definition.

The synagogue was founded around 1654. Around 1660, 300 Jews who had been expelled from Recife, Brazil, migrated to Barbados. Many of them were experienced in growing sugar cane and refining sugar, and had much to do with establishing the sugar industry in Barbados.

The Jewish community eventually reached 800. The synagogue was destroyed in a hurricane in 1831, but was rebuilt. The economy of Barbados worsened, and many of the Jews moved away to the U.S. and elsewhere. By the late 1920s, there was only one Jew left on the island, and he sold the synagogue building to outsiders.

Later Jewish immigrants came to Barbados, and began to rebuild the synagogue. They recently restored it to its appearance of the 1830s, and created a museum on the grounds. One could say that it is one of the oldest synagogues in the Americas, but also one of the newest.

The Jewish community in Barbados is still small. One source says 60 in the winter and only 20 in the summer.
