Summary
[edit]DescriptionBridge over Thornton Beck - geograph.org.uk - 439911.jpg |
English: Bridge over Thornton Beck. This bridge carries the A170 over Thornton Beck. To the left the A170 is called 438737¹ and to the right it is called 441395¹.
The buildings beyond the road are part of 439879, hotel, bar and squash club. The flow of water along Thornton Beck is managed though the village by a number of weirs and sluices that direct the flow along different water courses. In the foreground is a sluice, which empties into a water course that can be seen from Chestnut Avenue and Malton Gate¹. Beyond the bridge is a 440286 that also allows water into this water course. The footpath, on the left and leading into the foreground, is a public right of way called, Beck Isle¹. The footpath connects the eastern end of Chestnut Avenue (ahead, right) to Priestman's Lane¹ (behind the viewpoint and left). On the left of the picture is a slipway that allowed (allows?) vehicular access (no public right of way) to Manor Farm¹ behind the viewpoint. Also behind the viewpoint is 440318¹, one of North Yorkshire's most famous 'picture postcard views.' For a more easterly (behind the viewpoint and left) photograph of Beck Isle, click here 440349. ¹ Road/Building name information from OS Maps at:- Elgin, http://www.elgin.gov.uk/ |
