They w^ould certainly have been a picturesque reinforce-ment for Lord Roberts ; but it came out on inquiry thatthere really was no way of getting to Africa without crossingthe ocean, a prospect far more dreadful than battling withany number of Boers ; and so the volunteers returnedregretfully to their homes. The debt w^hich they owed to the EngHsh, by theway, was principally the service rendered to their nationby Stratford Canning in 1847 > when he insisted on therestoration of the children stolen as slaves by the Kurdsunder Bedr Khan Beg, the Mira of Bohtan, who per-petrated a fearful massacre of these mountaineers in thatyear. The return of those who had been given up as dead(and who were brought back in some cases from Aleppoand Smyrna) made a deep impression on the people, andhas never been forgotten since.
