DescriptionBridge across Palouse River at Winona, Washington, circa 1909 - DPLA - 345f648822528315de75233d11ddfe60.jpg | "The bridge shown in this postcard image has since been replaced. The bridge was located on Endicott Road on the west side of the community of Winona. The photograph used to produce this postcard was taken facing west. The house visible to the left of the bridge still exists [2014], while the structures to the right of the bridge are gone. The bridge was constructed by A. Valk of Pullman, Washington, in 1908 at a $3,234 cost to Whitman County taxpayers. The bridge's life was short. The replacement bridge, constructed by the Columbia Bridge Company in 1910 was 140 feet long and rested upon tubular piers. The following notice concerning the Winona Bridge was published on March 4, 1910, in the first extra edition of the Pullman Herald (Pullman, Whitman County, Washington; Volume 22, Number 22, Page 1, Column 6]: "County hit hard. The loss to the county is hard to estimate. Nearly every bridge between Pullman and Colfax has been either destroyed or damaged almost beyond repair. On Union flat all bridges are reported destroyed and along the Palouse From Pullman to Colfax nothing remains but the O. R. & N. bridge at Colfax. The large iron bridge at Winona, that was thought to be absolutely flood proof, was washed away and the smaller bridges in every direction from Pullman are gone.
