Summary
[edit]DescriptionBridge No 56 near Hatton Station, Warwickshire - geograph.org.uk - 1709729.jpg |
English: Bridge No 56 near Hatton Station, Warwickshire On the Grand Union Canal, bridge No 56 carries Station Road. This plain concrete bridge replaced an earlier one in the 1930s when the canal was upgraded to accommodate boats up to fourteen feet in width rather than the original seven. The present maximum beam allowed on the canal is 12ft 6in, but only following advice and permission from British Waterways.
The Warwick and Birmingham Canal was opened in December 1799 to carry locally mined coal to the industrial Midlands and later to the power stations. It also functioned as a link in a chain of eight differently owned canal companies connecting the Midlands with London. In 1929 these canals merged to form the Grand Union Canal operated by a single company. |
