Description

Brick Yard, Kendrick, Idaho.

Date: 1910 Source Type: Postcard Printer, Publisher, Photographer: Unknown Postmark: November 17, 1910, Linden, Idaho Collection: Steven R. Shook Remark: The brick yard in Kendrick, Latah County, Idaho, was established in 1898 by <a href="http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Fruchtl&GSiman=1&GScid=322922&GRid=123175172&" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Joseph Antone Fruchtl</a>. Joseph was born in Sigel, Shelby County, Illinois, on April 18, 1868, and died in Clarkston, Asotin County, Washington, on September 27, 1957.

Joseph married <a href="http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Fruchtl&GSiman=1&GScid=267838&GRid=59232639&" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Sophia S. Gertje</a> in 1889; the marriage was short-lived as Sophia died on May 15, 1901, at Cameron, Nez Perce County, Idaho. Joseph later married <a href="http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Fruchtl&GSiman=1&GScid=322922&GRid=127185937&" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Lillie Maude Thomas</a> in October 1903. Together, Joseph and Maude has nine children. Maude passed away on November 11, 1917, and Joseph married <a href="http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Fruchtl&GSiman=1&GScid=322922&GRid=127185938&" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Susana "Susie" Nelson</a> in February 1919. Susie passed away in December 29, 1952.

When a fire destroyed much of Kendrick in 1900, including the brickyard, Fruchtl had enough brick inventory to assist in rebuilding the business district of town.

The postcard is postmarked from Linden, Idaho. A post office was established in Linden, Latah County, Idaho, on May 24, 1889, with Joseph M. Butcher appointed as postmaster. Butcher was succeeded by James D. Kunes (March 28, 1890), Emma L. Lyons (September 10, 1891), Emma S. Longfellow (May 18, 1896), Mary Vaughan (January 13, 1904), Carrie M. Patterson (March 21, 1904), Hattie M. Alexander (May 18, 1908), William Sadler (May 23, 1924), and Eva S. Smith (June 15, 1929). The Linden post office was discontinued on December 31, 1929, with mail service directed to Crescent, Latah County, Idaho, located east and just over Cedar Ridge from Linden.

The message written on this postcard was directed to Miss Agnes Kingen.

Agnes was born on December 9, 1894, in Deer Park, Spokane County, Washington; she was the daughter of William Thomas Kingen (1867-1951) and Louisa "Eliza" (Hutchins) Kingen (1874-1944).

The Kingen family moved to Southwick, Nez Perce County, Idaho, in 1908, from the Deer Park area. Later, in 1918, the Kingen family moved to a home near Fraser in Nez Perce County. Agnes married Arthur Sackett on January 1, 1915, in Nez Perce County. Agnes died on April 9, 1988, in Spokane County, Washington, and is buried in Riverside Memorial Park in Spokane beside her husband Arthur.

The postcard message is as follows:
