General Staff Officer, 67 (Home Counties) Division Lt Col Nicholl was born in 1870 and educated at Eton and Staff College, Camberley. He joined the Militia in 1888 and the Bedfordshire Regiment in 1892. Lt Col Nicholl served in the Relief of Chitral Expedition of 1895, the India Frontier Expeditions of 1897 and 1898 and the Second Anglo-Boer War (during which he was wounded). He graduated at the Staff College, Camberley in 1904 and retired from the Army in 1908. On the outbreak of the First World War, Lt Col Nicholl was recalled to the Army and appointed General Staff Officer 2 Grade to the Wessex Territorial Division on 4 August 1914. He transferred to 49 (West Riding) Division on 15 March 1915 and was posted to the Western Front. On 15 January 1916, he transferred to 47 (London) Division as Deputy Assistant Adjutant and Quarter Master General. On 22 June 1916, he was appointed General Staff Officer First Grade to 67 (Home Counties) Division in England. Lt Col Nicholl continued to serve with this Division on the Western Front until he was transferred to the Reserve List on 6 March 1918. Lt Col Nicholl was twice Mentioned in Despatches and awarded the Distinguished Service Order on 1 January 1916.
